Gopher Hockey Team on to the Frozen Four!

The Gophers hockey team continues to follow the path laid out for them by the Gophers women's hockey team that took home the National Championship hardware earlier this month. The Gophers crushed border rival North Dakota 5-2 to win the West Regional at Xcel Energy Center. Outstanding goalie, Kent Patterson, was named the region's Most Outstanding Player. Now the Gophers move on to the Frozen Four and a date with Boston College on April 5th at the Frozen Four in Tampa, Florida. This will be a stiff challenge for the Gophers, as Boston College is the overall top seed in the NCAA tournament. However, the Gophers are playing excellent and have to be a huge threat to take home the hardware.

This is the Gophers 4th trip to the Frozen Four during Don Lucia's 13 seasons as coach. The Gophers last National Championships were the back to back titles in 2002 & 2003.

  1. This game against BC has the potential to be an epic battle. BC has won 17 games in a row they have very big defensemen and very fast forwards. They are ranked number one and deserve that ranking. With that said the Gophers are certainly capable of winning. Patterson will have to make some big stops, however I'm not sure how many teams BC has seen that have the skill and depth that we have on our roster. I see two critical keys for a Gopher victory. Scoring first will be so important for the confidence of our young team. However I feel the biggest thing the Gophers have to do is play a full 60 minutes, at times this year the Gophs have stopped skating for a period or so. That will not work against a team with the talent of BC. This game should be a lot of fun to watch. We can win but we absolutely have to bring our best effort to rink to make it happen. Go Gophers!
